How many trackers do you need for full body tracking? 6, 8, 10 or 20

It is the question we get most before people buy: how many trackers do I need for full body in VRChat? The answer depends on what you want to do in VR. Here is what each tracker covers and which set fits each case.
Short answer
- 6 trackers: the standard for full body in VRChat. It's what most people use.
- 8 trackers: adds the feet, so they look natural when walking, sitting or dancing.
- 10 trackers: adds the arms (elbows), ideal for dancing, posing and VTubing.
- 20 trackers: extended motion capture (spine, neck, head and full arms) for animation and content.
What each tracker covers
Your headset and controllers already track your head and hands. The trackers fill in the rest of the body:
| Set | Positions | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Chest, hips, 2 thighs, 2 ankles | Independent legs and torso: walk, sit, lie down, kick |
| 8 | The above + 2 feet | Real foot rotation: tiptoes, crossed legs, dancing |
| 10 | The above + 2 elbows | Natural arms, without relying on the game guessing your elbows |
| 20 | The above + spine, neck, head and arm segments | Detailed motion capture for animation and VTubing |
Why not 3 trackers?
With 3 trackers (hips + 2 feet, the classic Vive Tracker setup) the game has to guess where your knees are. With IMU sensors like the ones in madTrackers, each tracker measures the rotation of its body segment, so thighs and ankles are needed to rebuild the legs properly. With 6 trackers the result is more faithful than 3 Vive Trackers in most poses, and without base stations.
Which set to choose
- Casual VRChat: 6 trackers. You sit, walk and lie down and your legs move like yours. Best balance between price and result.
- Dancing and posing: 8 trackers. Feet make a big difference to presence: tiptoes, spins and crossed legs look right.
- VTubing, streaming or VRChat photos: 10 trackers. With elbows, arms no longer depend on the game's estimate.
- Animation or motion capture: 20 trackers, to record detailed movement.
Can I start with 6 and add more later?
Yes. madTrackers Server lets you choose how many trackers you use (6, 8, 10 or 20) and assign each one by tapping a body part on screen and moving the tracker you're wearing there. If you later want to add feet or elbows, contact us and we'll help you expand your set.
Placement tips
- Thighs: mid-thigh, towards the outer side, where muscles move them less.
- Ankles: on the shin, just above the ankle.
- Hips: centred, on your waist or belt.
- Chest: centre of the chest, tight so it doesn't bounce.
- After placing them, run Mounting calibration once and a full reset every time you start playing. It's explained in the initial setup guide.
Conclusion
If in doubt, start with 6 trackers: it's what most people use and it completely changes how you look and move in VRChat. If foot and arm detail matters to you, go straight to 8 or 10. See prices for every set on the home page.
