madTrackers vs SlimeVR: differences, price and which to choose (2026)
By madKoding · Published on
If you are looking for SlimeVR trackers, you most likely want the same thing almost everybody does: full body tracking for VRChat without paying what Vive Trackers and base stations cost. SlimeVR and madTrackers solve that problem with the same idea, but in different ways. This guide explains the differences plainly so you can choose well.
Short answer
- Choose SlimeVR if you enjoy building, soldering or configuring things yourself, want an open source project and don't mind importing or buying from an independent builder.
- Choose madTrackers if you want trackers that are ready to use, with their own USB receiver, up to 100 hours of battery, simple software and real support and warranty.
Are madTrackers SlimeVR trackers?
No. They use the same kind of technology (IMU motion sensors, no cameras or base stations), but they are a different product, with their own hardware, firmware and software. You don't need SlimeVR Server: madTrackers ships its own app, madTrackers Server, which connects the trackers to SteamVR or sends tracking over OSC to VRChat.
How each one works
Both systems put an IMU (accelerometer + gyroscope) on each body part. Using each sensor's rotation and your body measurements, the software computes your full pose and hands it to the game. That is why you don't need base stations or a camera that can see you.
The difference is everything around the sensor:
| madTrackers | SlimeVR | |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | IMU (LSM6DSV / ICM-45686) | IMU (varies by model or builder) |
| Connection | Own USB radio receiver (RF 2.4 GHz), no WiFi or Bluetooth | Originally WiFi; some third-party versions use nRF-style receivers |
| Software | madTrackers Server (SteamVR or OSC) | SlimeVR Server (open source) |
| Battery | Up to 100 hours | Depends on the model; WiFi versions use much more power |
| Size | 3.8 cm per side | Varies by model and case |
| Assembly | Ready to use | Official, independent builders or DIY |
| Support | WhatsApp and Discord | Community (Discord) and whoever sold them |
Connection: WiFi vs dedicated receiver
This is the difference you notice the most day to day. Trackers that use WiFi depend on your router: if the network is busy, the router is far away or someone at home is streaming, you can get dropouts or latency. WiFi also drains the battery faster.
madTrackers use a dedicated USB receiver: the trackers talk to it directly, not to your network. Plug it in, turn the trackers on and they show up on their own in madTrackers Server with battery and signal. No networks or passwords to configure.
Battery
Battery life decides whether trackers become a chore. With up to 100 hours of use, a madTrackers set lasts several days of play on one charge. With WiFi systems it is normal to charge after every long session.
Drift and tracking quality
Every IMU tracker has drift: over time the orientation slowly deviates and you need a reset. Quality depends heavily on the sensor. madTrackers use current-generation sensors (LSM6DSV and ICM-45686), with typical intervals of 45 to 60 minutes before you notice drift, and automatic drift correction enabled by default. Learn how to reduce it in our drift guide.
Software: SlimeVR Server vs madTrackers Server
SlimeVR Server is powerful and open, with plenty of options for advanced users. madTrackers Server is designed to get you playing in four steps:
- Connect the receiver and turn the trackers on.
- Assign each tracker by tapping a body part and moving it.
- Calibrate (full reset, mounting and feet).
- Play in SteamVR or VRChat over OSC.
The installer includes the SteamVR driver and registers it automatically. The step-by-step is in the initial setup guide.
Support, warranty and shipping
Buying SlimeVR usually means importing or buying from an independent builder, where support depends on that person. With madTrackers you get support before and after buying, a warranty (the battery is not covered, as it is a consumable), 30 days to return and online order tracking from the moment you pay. We ship internationally with tracking.
Which one should you get?
- You like tinkering and want the open source ecosystem: SlimeVR.
- You want to plug in and play, without WiFi, with battery for several days and real support: madTrackers.
