How to get full body tracking in VRChat: PC and Quest guide (2026)
By madKoding · Published on
Full body tracking (FBT) is what makes your legs, hips and torso move like yours in VRChat: you can sit, dance, lie down or cross your legs and your avatar does the same. This guide explains what you need and how to get it working on both PC and Quest.
What you need
- A VR headset (Meta Quest, Pico, Valve Index, HTC Vive, etc.).
- Full body trackers. There are three kinds:
- IMU (motion sensors): madTrackers, SlimeVR and similar. No base stations or cameras needed.
- Laser (Vive Tracker 3.0): very precise, but they need base stations and a PC.
- Camera/AI: cheap, but they lose tracking when the camera can't see you.
- A full body compatible avatar. Most humanoid avatars are.
If you don't know how many trackers to buy, read how many trackers you need. Spoiler: 6 gives you complete full body.
Option 1: PC VRChat through SteamVR
The most common way if you play PC VR or Quest over Link / Air Link / Virtual Desktop.
- Install madTrackers Server from the firmware page. The installer includes the SteamVR driver and registers it automatically.
- Plug in the USB receiver and turn the trackers on: they show up in the app on their own.
- Assign each tracker to a body part and calibrate (full reset, mounting and feet). Details in the initial setup guide.
- Open SteamVR: the trackers appear with their role already assigned (hips, chest, knees, feet, elbows). In the app, Settings → Outputs → SteamVR should say Driver connected.
- Open VRChat and follow the in-game calibration steps (below).
Option 2: VRChat over OSC (PC or Quest)
VRChat accepts tracking over OSC, a network protocol. It's how you get full body on Quest without SteamVR.
- In VRChat, enable OSC in Action Menu → Options → OSC → Enabled.
- If you play on Quest, enter the Quest's IP in madTrackers Server under Settings → Outputs → VRChat. Your PC and Quest must be on the same network.
- Calibrate in madTrackers Server and then in VRChat.
Important: in PC VRChat use SteamVR or OSC, not both at once, or the game will receive duplicated tracking.
There's a standalone mode video in the tutorials section of the firmware page.
Calibrating in VRChat
- Stand up straight in a clear space.
- In the quick menu, press Calibrate FBT.
- You'll see your avatar in a T-pose and the trackers as small spheres or cubes. Line your body up with the avatar and pull both triggers.
- If something looks off, use Reset FBT in the menu and start again.
Tip: set your height in madTrackers Server (Settings → Body) and your avatar height in VRChat before calibrating. With SteamVR you can use automatic calibration, which measures the floor with a controller and your height with the headset on.
Common problems
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| SteamVR doesn't show the trackers | Close SteamVR, open madTrackers Server and reopen SteamVR. The app repairs the driver on every start. |
| VRChat receives nothing over OSC | Check OSC is enabled in VRChat and the Quest IP is correct. |
| The avatar rotates on its own over time | That's drift: use orientation reset. More in the drift guide. |
| Legs end up twisted | Repeat Mounting calibration and then a full reset. |
| Duplicated or jittery tracking | Don't use SteamVR and OSC at the same time in PC VRChat. |
Which games besides VRChat?
Any SteamVR game that supports full body trackers (for example Resonite or ChilloutVR), and apps that accept OSC.
